Joseph E. Root
Chief Patent and Trademark Counsel
Joe has served as both IP and General Counsel, in-house and out, for corporations and law firms, in a career spanning three decades. He has assumed both management and hands-on responsibilities for the identification, protection, and enforcement of both patents and trademarks. On one hand, he has conducted broad IP procurement programs, securing patent protection in high-tech industries in locations like California’s Silicon Valley, as well as managing international patent portfolios for high-tech giants, as well as trademark portfolios for instantly recognizable marks such as CAMEL cigarettes and SAN MIGUEL beer. He has also protected and enforced those rights, in courts around the world as well as opposition proceedings in various trademark registration offices and the EPO. He has gained broad expertise at integrating IP tools to produce business results, such as a product introduction for Erno Rubik (of cube fame), combining trademark, patent, and copyright programs. His expertise was recently recognized by Intellectual Asset Management magazine, of London, which named him to its listing, “IAM Strategy 250 – The World’s Leading IP Strategists.”
Joe's experience ranges from top-level law firms, such as Kenyon & Kenyon in New York, to international corporations, like SAP and Johnson Controls. He also has been a frequent speaker and writer on patent drafting and IP strategy, and he is the author of a treatise, Patent Drafting by the Rules: Guidelines from the Federal Circuit, published by the Oxford University Press in February 2011.
